Athletics at GFMS

Fall sports at GFMS and TFHS are soccer, golf, field hockey, volleyball, football, and cheerleading. Middle school students can try out to play on any team, including Varsity teams. Teams at the Middle School level are geared towards learning the game, building individual skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. There is NOT any emphasis on winning at the Middle School level. JV and Varsity are more competitive.

We try to have students signed up for fall sports within the first week of school. Some sports actually  start practicing before school opens, and by the end of the first week key skills have been taught as well as routines. Also, students need to be in “shape” before games start and games start right away for many sports.

MS practices are normally 1 hr 30 minutes to 2 hours TOPS and we try to start them as close to dismissal as possible -- but it depends on the coach’s schedule.

We LOVE to have parents come to support their student/athletes at games!! They do NOT need to be at practices -- in fact, we find it is often better for coaches and kids to practice without parents watching. Transportation to and from games is provided. Players will need a way to get home from the school after games and after practices.

We do everything that we can to avoid “cuts”. However some sports do have some limits to them. Any MS student that shows up to every practice, practices hard, and is in good standing in school with grades and behavior WILL play in the games. Playing time is not, and never will be, exactly equal, but all athletes will be given a chance if they meet the requirements.
