Friday News

April 5, 2019

Dear Hillcrest Families,

Happy April!  Hillcrest students have really enjoyed this first week of April!  Despite the chilly winds, we’ve been so happy to get outside for recess each day. And, several classes have been enjoying the spring weather by running some mid-morning laps around the playground. There’s nothing like a short burst of physical activity to boost our brain power! In addition to extra outdoor activity, our students have a range of opportunities to move their bodies and increase their level of focus each day.  In Hillcrest classrooms, students participate in GoNoodle activities, the Inner Explorer Mindfulness program and S’Cool Moves. Ask your Hillcrest student to teach you a few dance moves, a mindfulness practice or some wall push-ups or dots & squeezes.

A few important notes:

  • We’ll be celebrating National Poetry Month at our April All School Meeting on Friday, April 26th. We’ll enjoy presentations from Mrs. Prevett’s preschoolers, Mrs. Lesenski’s kindergarten students and Miss Matrishon’s first graders.  If you’re interested in exploring poetry with your child, check out the following link on the Reading Rockets site http://www.readingrockets.org/calendar/poetry.

  • Our Hillcrest School Council has been busy planning our Story Walk for Saturday, May 4th.  We’ll be creating an interactive family reading experience along Avenue A from 10:00 a.m to noon. And, you’ll also be able to view your student’s artwork in a gallery format at La Mariposa Collective.  Our featured book is Call Me Tree/Llamame Arbol by Maya Christina Gonzalez.  All of our students have been creating artwork related to this book during their weekly art classes with Ms. Castro-Santos. School Council would love to have some volunteer helpers to assist at this event.  If you’re able to lend a hand, please send me an email at sarah.burstein@gmrsd.org or give me a call at 413-863-9526.
