Friday News

December 2, 2022

Dear Hillcrest Families,

Welcome to December!  Mother Nature treated us with a cold and windy blast on the first day of December and it was a good reminder that we all need to bundle up! Please be sure that your child has a hat, mittens and warm winter jacket at school every single day.  And, once the snowy weather begins, snow pants and snow boots are essential.  If you are having trouble obtaining winter outdoor gear, please let your child’s teacher know.

A few important news items:

  • The GMRSD Annual Food Drive has begun!  There are collection boxes for each grade level located in the entryway of the school building. And, Friends of Hillcrest is helping us to keep the Food Drive momentum going with a friendly competition among preschool, kindergarten and first grade.  Please check out the flier attached to your weekly email for details.

  • We will hold our December All School Meeting on Friday, December 16th at 9:00 a.m. We’re looking forward to presentations from Ms. Chanda’s Preschoolers, Ms. Kelly’s Kindergarten Class  and Ms. Johnson’s First Graders.

  • An Important Safety Reminder – Please be extra cautious while driving in the main traffic circle at arrival and dismissal time. In particular, please follow all traffic laws regarding school buses.  DO NOT pass a school bus, school van, or other school transportation vehicle that is displaying flashing lights and/or an extended stop sign.  We have had several drivers disregard this important law recently.  This law is in place to protect the safety of our whole community.

  • December is traditionally a time when children’s bedtime routines may get  interrupted by holiday preparations and celebrations. Young children need a significant amount of sleep in order to stay healthy and participate fully at school.  Did you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children ages three to five get 10 to 13 hours of sleep each day and that children ages six to thirteen get 9 to 12 hours of sleep each day?  An early bedtime is so important for Hillcrest students.  If your child is having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, please reach out to your health care provider for support.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend –

Sarah Burstein, Hillcrest Principal
