Friday News

February 3, 2023

Dear Hillcrest Families,

Happy February!  February has arrived with a big wintry blast! On super cold days like today, we will be indoors for recess, but please continue to send all  of your child’s winter gear every single day.  When the temperature (accounting for wind chill) is above 20 degrees, we seize the opportunity to get outdoors for fresh air and exercise.

A few important news items:

  • On our Early Release Day this week, teams of Hillcrest teachers gather to review each student’s mid-year literacy and math data.  At these data meetings, we review student progress, set individual learning goals and plan for instructional adjustments.

  • The Hillcrest Math Newsletter went home last week and we want to encourage all of our students to participate in this month’s Math Challenge. Email Ms. Hirst with your child's highest count by Friday, February 10th to be entered for a math prize! veronica.hirst@gmrsd.org

  • We have several great family events planned and we hope you can join us! Please mark your calendars for Coca & Crafts on February 9th, Read Across Hillcrest on March 3rd, and GMRSD Family Math Night on April 26th.  Details to follow.

  • Another great way to boost your engagement in your child’s learning is through the attached Fitness Calendar created by Ms. Tyler, our P.E. teacher.  Please consider participating in these fitness activities along with your Hillcrest student.

  • A note from Molly Brooks, Director of Food Services – If you have a student that wants to add a milk to a home lunch they have two options:

  1. They can have a milk for $0.50 either cash or on their account

  1. They can take a bonus bag which is a reimbursable meal and thus will be Free.

A bonus bag will consist of milk, either regular white or chocolate, with at least 2 fruits or vegetables. It will have whatever the kitchen has for shelf stable or fresh fruits and vegetables or vegetable juice.  Fruit juice is            not  an option.

REPEAT ITEMS

  • Valentine’s Day is coming up and your child’s teacher will be sending home a letter about their plans for exchanging valentine cards in the classroom. Please note that this is an optional activity. If you chose to send valentines to school, please do not send any edible treats (candy, cookies, etc.).  Our school policy prohibits food being sent into school for any kind of holiday or celebration.  We will not be able to distribute your child’s valentine cards if they contain any edible treats.

  • Another upcoming school-based celebration is the 100th Day of School, which is currently scheduled to take place on Friday, February 10th.  Please be on the lookout for communication from your child’s teacher about this fun day of mathematics learning.

  • Looking ahead to the springtime, we’ll be holding our Open House for NEW kindergarten families on Thursday, March 31st and our Open House for NEW preschool families on Friday, April 28th. Details to follow.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend –

Sarah Burstein, Hillcrest Principal
