Friday News 10/18/2018

Dear Hillcrest Families,

It seems that Fall is finally here!  Our students have been arriving each morning wearing their cozy sweatshirts and jackets and sometimes their hats and gloves, too! Thank you for sending your children to school ready to enjoy outdoor play as the weather cools down.  Getting outside for recess each day is a top priority around here and having the appropriate layers is so helpful!

A few items to note:

  • We will conduct our first Lockdown Drill of the school year on Monday, October 22nd.  Your child has practiced this important safety routine with his or her teacher this week.  Lockdown Drills, like Fire Drills, are a necessary component of school safety planning and we always focus on teaching our students about these routines in a developmentally appropriate manner.  We are fortunate to collaborate with local and state safety officers to develop effective procedures. If you have any questions about our safety routines, please let me know.

  • Wednesday, October 24th is an Early Release/Teacher In-Service Day.  Preschoolers will be dismissed at 11:30 and kindergarten and first grade students will be dismissed at noon.  Our Hillcrest staff members will be engaged in several different professional development activities that afternoon. Some of our topics including Engaging Students in Cooperative Learning, Strategies for Supporting Students with Autism, and Crisis Prevention Intervention.

  • On Friday, October 26th, we will gather for our October All School Meeting at 9:00. October’s theme is Mathematics. We will enjoy presentations from Mrs. Prevett’s preschool class, Mrs. Lesenski’s kindergarten class and Ms. Smith’s first grade class.

  • Our school pictures arrived yesterday and they are beautiful! If your child missed our first Picture Day, or if you’d like to have your original photos retaken, our Picture Retake Day will be Tuesday, October 30th.

  • Parent Conferences are coming up . . . mark your calendars for November 8th and 9th. If you attended Open House last week, you probably signed up for your conference at that time. If not, please be in touch with your child’s teacher through a note in the blue folder or via email.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend --

Sarah Burstein
