Friday News

December 14, 2018

Dear Hillcrest Families,

As much as I love winter here in New England, I have to admit that I’ve been delighted by two full weeks without any snow! Having consistent five day weeks of school with no Snow Day interruptions is a very welcome gift! We are so happy to have uninterrupted time to focus on our students’ learning.

A few important notes:

  • We hope that families and friends will join us for our December All School Meeting on Friday, December 21st at 9:00. Our December theme is Social Studies. The following classes will present their learning: Ms. Chase’s Preschoolers, Mrs. Fox’s Kindergarten students, Ms. Casey’s First Graders, and Ms. Wulfkuhle’s English Language Learners.
  • It’s that time of year when our students need their outdoor gear here at school every day. We are committed to getting outside whenever the temperature is above 20 degrees and our playgrounds are free of ice. So, please be sure to send those boots, snowpants, jackets, hats and mittens each day. Even when the temps are in the teens at 8:00 a.m., it’s often warm enough by midday for us to get outside.
  • And, on a related note, please label all of your child’s outdoor items. Please write their first name and last initial on boots, jackets and snowpants with a permanent marker. We are teaching our students to keep track of their things, to hang them up neatly and to store small items like mittens and hats in their coat sleeves. Despite this careful teaching, items may get misplaced and those labels are so important for getting items back to their owners!
  • A final note about outdoor gear: It’s important for students to have sneakers or other shoes to wear during the school day as their feet get really sweaty in their snow boots and those boots make our carpets pretty messy! Please continue to send sneakers or shoes to school throughout the winter.
  • And a recurring reminder: Please be respectful of the Fire Zones and Handicap Parking Spaces at our school. There is NO PARKING in the Fire Zones at any time of the day -- this includes “live parking.” The Handicap Accessible spots are reserved for vehicles with the legally required tags.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend --

Sarah Burstein
